“Who is the best knee replacement surgeon near me?” More patients now type questions like this into ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google, and get a short written answer that names a few doctors. If your practice is not in that answer, many of those patients will never see your website.
This guide explains, in plain terms, what these AI tools draw on and what you can do so they describe your practice accurately.
How AI answers choose which doctors to mention
AI assistants do not have a secret list of good doctors. When a patient asks a question, the tool combines what it learned during training with information it finds on the web at the time of the question. In practice, the doctors who appear tend to be the ones the web describes clearly and consistently, for example:
- Practices with complete, accurate Google Business Profiles and directory listings
- Doctors with clear pages explaining what they treat and where they practice
- Practices with genuine reviews that mention specific conditions and treatments
- Doctors mentioned on trusted third-party sites, such as hospital pages, medical associations, news articles and podcasts
None of this guarantees a mention, and each AI tool works differently and changes often. Google explains how its own AI features use web content in its guide AI features and your website. But the same foundations make you easier to find in AI answers, in Google search and in Google Maps.
Seven steps to improve your AI visibility
1. Check what AI tools say about you today
Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google a few questions your patients would ask, for example “best spine surgeon in Tampa” or “who treats sports injuries in Hyderabad”. Note whether you appear, what is said about you and whether it is accurate. Our free AI Visibility Check does this for you.
2. Make your details identical everywhere
Your name, specialty, practice name, address and phone number should match exactly on your website, Google Business Profile, hospital page and directories. Inconsistent details make it harder for any system to be sure who you are. Google’s guidelines for representing your business explain what it expects on a Business Profile.
3. Give every condition and procedure its own clear page
A page titled “ACL reconstruction in Dallas” that explains who it helps, what recovery looks like and how to book is far easier for AI tools to understand than one long page listing everything you do.
4. Answer the questions patients actually ask
Add short, direct answers to common questions on each page: how long recovery takes, whether insurance is accepted, what to bring to the first visit. AI answers often quote this kind of clear, factual content.
5. Earn reviews that describe real experiences
Reviews that mention the condition treated and the outcome, written freely by real patients, help both patients and AI tools understand what you are known for. Ask every satisfied patient, never offer incentives, and never write reviews yourself; Google’s review content policy explains what is not allowed.
6. Get mentioned on trusted sites
Being quoted in a local news story, speaking on a health podcast, writing for your medical association or being listed on your hospital’s doctor directory all create independent references to your expertise. These are among the strongest signals you can build.
7. Use structured data on your website
Structured data (schema markup) labels your website’s information in a way machines read easily: that you are a physician, your specialty, your practice location and your hours. Your web developer or agency can add it in a few hours.
What not to do
- Do not publish exaggerated claims or guarantees. Medical advertising rules still apply, and AI tools may repeat what you say.
- Do not create fake profiles, buy reviews or copy content from other sites.
- Do not expect overnight results. Most changes take weeks or months to be reflected in AI answers.
