Patient footfall: what it means and how hospitals increase it

Ask any hospital owner in India how the month went and you will often hear one word: footfall. It is one of the simplest numbers in healthcare management, and one of the most useful when you understand what is behind it.

What does patient footfall mean?

Patient footfall is the number of patients who physically visit your hospital, clinic or diagnostic center in a given period, usually counted per day or per month. The term comes from retail, where footfall means the number of people walking into a shop.

In a hospital, footfall usually refers to outpatient (OPD) visits, because that is where most patient journeys begin. Many hospitals also track footfall by department, by doctor and by source, for example walk-ins, referrals, camps and online bookings.

Why footfall matters

Footfall is an early signal. When it rises, admissions, procedures, diagnostics and pharmacy revenue usually follow. When it falls, you often see the effect on revenue weeks later. Watching footfall closely lets you act before a slow month becomes a slow quarter.

It also tells you which parts of your marketing are working. If online bookings rise after you improve your Google Business Profile, or referrals rise after you meet local doctors, footfall shows it.

How to measure footfall properly

A single total is not enough. Track these five numbers every month:

  1. Total new patients, separate from follow-up visits.
  2. New patients by department and by doctor.
  3. Source of each new patient: Google search, Google Maps, social media, referral from another doctor, a camp, word of mouth or walk-in. Ask at registration and record it.
  4. Enquiries that did not become visits: calls and messages that never turned into an appointment.
  5. Conversion from OPD visit to procedure or admission, by department.

With these, you can see not only how many patients came, but why they came and where you are losing them.

Nine ways to increase patient footfall

1. Make your Google Business Profile complete and accurate

For most local searches like “orthopedic hospital near me”, the map results come first. Make sure your name, address, phone, hours and departments are correct, add real photos, and list your services. Our free Google Business Profile checklist walks through each field, and Google’s own guidelines for representing your business explain what is allowed.

2. Earn genuine reviews every week

Patients compare ratings before they choose. Ask satisfied patients personally, at discharge or at a follow-up visit, with a short link or QR code. Never buy reviews or offer incentives (Google’s review content policy prohibits both), and reply to every review politely without sharing medical details.

3. Build a page for each department and major treatment

Patients search for their problem, not for your hospital name. A clear page for knee replacement, cataract surgery or maternity care, written in simple language, helps you appear when they search.

4. Make booking easy

Many enquiries are lost at this step. Answer calls quickly, offer WhatsApp booking, and make sure the online form works well on a phone. Call back every missed call the same day.

5. Strengthen referral relationships

General practitioners, smaller clinics and pharmacies refer a large share of patients in most Indian cities. Visit them, share clear referral contacts, and send a short update when you treat a patient they referred.

6. Run focused health camps

Camps work best when they target one need, for example a bone density camp for women over 50, and when every attendee leaves with a clear next step and a booking slot.

7. Use doctor-led education on social media

Short videos of your doctors answering common questions build trust before the first visit. Patients are more likely to choose a doctor they have already seen explaining their condition.

8. Follow up with every patient

Reminder calls and messages for follow-up visits, test results and preventive checkups bring patients back, and returning patients recommend you to others.

9. Improve the experience at the front desk

Waiting time, billing clarity and how staff speak to patients decide whether people recommend you. A hospital that markets well but treats patients poorly will see footfall fall again.
